Can You Write About Topics You Know Nothing About?
So, picture this: you're a digital marketer, and suddenly, you're tasked with writing about a topic you know absolutely nothing about. Cue the panic? Nope!
I’ve worked with some really amazing clients – most of which I knew nothing about their industry or product before writing website content or social posts. There's a strategy that can help you conquer this challenge with confidence.
Let's dive into it:
Interview and Extensive Research
Tap into your investigative journalism side. Talk extensively with your client, dig deep, and unravel their tone, both on paper and in person. Get to know their product or service like it's the latest juicy gossip. This detective work will help you understand their brand personality and write in a way that's uniquely them.
Competitor Analysis
I mean, obviously. Check out what your client's top three rivals are posting about on social media and discussing on their websites. By eavesdropping on their conversations, you'll get a good grasp of the industry trends and uncover hot topics to spice up your client's content.
SEO Research
Invest in a good SEO Tool. Look at what other folks in the industry are saying, even if they're not direct competitors. This magical journey will open your eyes to the wondrous things happening in the field and uncover keywords and phrases that speak to your target audience.
Client Reviews (YUP!)
Brace yourself, this one might feel like trudging through quicksand, but it's worth it! Before launching anything into the digital realm, make sure your client has reviewed the post or article and GIVEN FEEDBACK. Stay humble about it and start the partnership saying you’ll need guidance for a bit. Give the client ample space to say, “you didn’t nail this, try again.” How else are you going to learn?
Now, here's the coolest part: being able to dive into unfamiliar topics with grace and a sprinkle of pizzazz makes you a remarkable marketer and copywriter. By adapting and using the resources at your disposal, you'll impress clients left and right. Remember, it's not about being an all-knowing guru but rather about embracing the adventure, having fun, and delivering content that wows your audience.
